‘Completed in 1853, Bishopscourt, designed by Newson and Blackburn, is the oldest remaining house in East Melbourne. A feature is the arch and pilastered verandah. Originally built for Bishop Charles Perry, first Anglican Bishop of Melbourne, it also doubled as Victoria’s Government House in 1874-6. It has been the residence of all
Melbourne’s Bishops and Archbishops since its completion. In 1903 the red brick wing designed by Walter Butler replaced part of the original bluestone building.
